False starts are a natural part of the process (babies are opinionated!), so wait to stock up on any one bottle until you’re certain you’ve found a match. Once you’re settled, buy four if you’re breast and bottle feeding, eight to twelve for bottle feeding only.

what to know
Things to consider when shopping for baby bottles.
shape & feel
Bottles with wider, soft
nipples feel most like a
breast. Slim light ones may
be easier for babies learning
to hold. Ergonomic shapes
can be easier for you. Try
holding a few.
safety & sustainability
The FDA has banned
bisphenol A (BPAs) in
bottles, so these days most
(even plastic) should be safe
—just don’t use hand me
downs, which could still
contain them. Glass and
silicone are the most
sustainable.
anti-gas innovations
Many bottles now have
inner workings that are
designed to keep extra air
from getting into little
tummies. Try one if your
baby spits up a lot, has
trouble with gas, or is fussy
after eating.
flow rate
Marked by “stages,” nipples
allow milk to flow at
different speeds. Start with
one that corresponds to
your baby’s age, then watch:
if milk spills out or they gag,
it's flowing too freely.
Sucking fiercely? Time to
move up.
…all about nipple shapes
traditional
This classic nipple shape is straight with a thinner base and tends to be popular with babies of all ages and stages.
orthodontic
Bulb-shaped with a flat side, this type helps baby’s tongue move properly and is a good choice for teething babies.
natural
Designed to mimic the breast, this is a shape that is easiest for many babies who are both breast and bottle feeding.
…and the materials used to make bottles
polypropylene
Light and unbreakable, polypropylene is as comfortable to hold and easy to care for as plastic, but engineered to be free of BPAs.
glass
Glass bottles are still popular, despite being heavier than most, because they are durable, dishwasher safe, naturally BPA free, and resist the build-up of bacteria. Of course, glass can also break, though you can buy silicone sleeves to protect them.
silicone
As light as plastic but soft (and skin-like) to the touch, silicone bottles are BPA free and work well for babies learning to hold them on their own or who have a strong preference for the breast.
hybrid
Polypropylene on the outside and glass on the inside, hybrid bottles are as strong, unbreakable, and light as plastic but with all the advantages of glass. A real game changer.

...something else to try
Babies who fuss for food non-stop, then just play around without drinking, may just have a powerful urge to suck.
shop pacifiers
There are breastfed babies who never take all that well to the bottle and are happy to move to a sippy cup as soon as that’s an option. Some work as early as six months.
